Introducing the Calavera Collection Celebrating Mexican Día de los Muertos

At IFL Watches, every project starts with a feeling. This time, it started with color.

The Calavera Collection is our tribute to Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, a tradition that celebrates life by honoring those who came before us. It is joyful, expressive, and filled with symbolism. It is not quiet. It is not minimal. And it is definitely not boring.

Built on the Citizen Tsuyosa platform, the Calavera Nocturna in 40mm and the Calavera Turquesa in 37mm transform a modern automatic watch into a fully hand painted canvas. Each model is limited to 200 pieces. Every dial is painted by hand, meaning no two will ever be identical.

This is art you can wear. And it carries meaning.

A Celebration of Life, the Mexican Way

In Mexico, Día de los Muertos takes place on November 1 and 2. Families gather to welcome back the spirits of loved ones with music, food, candles, and marigold flowers. Altars are decorated with sugar skulls, photos, and favorite foods of those being remembered.

The calavera, or sugar skull, has become the most recognizable symbol of this celebration. It is colorful. It smiles. It is detailed and full of character. It reminds us that remembering someone does not have to be heavy. It can be bright. It can be joyful.

That spirit became the foundation of this collection.

Two Interpretations, One Spirit

The Calavera Nocturna takes a darker approach. On a deep dial background, a decorated sugar skull wearing a striped sombrero sits proudly at the center. Surrounding it are maracas, bones, butterflies, ornamental patterns, and flowers that stretch across the entire surface. Every millimeter is alive with detail. It is bold and expressive, especially in the 40mm case which gives the artwork room to breathe and dominate the wrist.

The Calavera Turquesa tells a different story. Set on a turquoise sunray dial, a bone colored skull is wrapped in a purple serpent, resting above a vibrant bed of flowers in coral, pink, blue, and orange. The upper half of the dial remains open, allowing the composition to feel lighter. The lower half bursts with color and motion. In the 37mm case, it wears slightly more compact, but just as strong.

Painted by Hand, One by One

Every single dial in the Calavera Collection is painted by hand.

There is no mass printing. No shortcuts. The brush strokes vary. The colors shift slightly. The expressions on the skulls are never perfectly the same. The flowers bloom differently from piece to piece.

That is what makes each watch personal. You are not just wearing a limited edition. You are wearing an individual artwork.

For collectors who care about craftsmanship and not just specifications, that detail matters.

The Watch Behind the Artwork – Citizen Tsuyosa

We chose the Citizen Tsuyosa for good reason.

Its cushion shaped stainless steel case with sharp chamfered edges gives it a strong wrist presence without feeling oversized. The integrated three link bracelet keeps the profile clean and modern. It is a versatile platform that works equally well as a daily watch or a statement piece.

Inside runs the Caliber 8210 automatic movement. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, features 21 jewels, and delivers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The exhibition caseback allows you to see the movement in action, a reminder that beneath the color and art is real mechanical substance.

An anti reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial while maintaining clarity from different angles. With 50 meters of water resistance, both models are ready for everyday wear.

The Nocturna comes in a 40mm case with a 45mm lug to lug measurement and 12mm thickness. The Turquesa comes in a 37mm case, 11.5mm thick, with a 41.9mm lug to lug. Two sizes, same mechanical foundation.

I like watches — a lot. When I’m not geeking out over dials, bezels, and movements, I’m probably getting lost in an Xbox session, hopping on a plane to somewhere new, or hunting down my next favorite meal.
